Re: Overpopulation

@NikoLStak

Americans have tried invading us in the past, it has never gone well for them and if they tried, they would lose. We would likely have the support of the EU (given our membership in groups like le Francophone, a de facto alliance with the French speaking world, and the commonwealth, which gets Britain, Australia, New Zealand, India et al)  which is a more than sufficient counter balance to the Americans. We also have our own military, one of the best trained in the western world.

Re: Overpopulation

@Kronblom

Canada has more than 1 million freshwater lakes, which if I recall, is more than half the total number in the world, we also have the great lakes, which alone account for a significant chunk of the worlds liquid fresh water (if you count the frozen stuff, you have to then factor that we control about 1/5 to 1/4 of the arctic which the ice is entirely fresh water, with territory that technically includes the North pole).

Re: Overpopulation

@SgtPeppers
Indeed. But this depend more on the parentals aspirations of each persons I think.

"we would need 4 or 5 earths to provide the resources"

Maybe this is what we need to get.

Re: Overpopulation

@Kronblom

You suppose that US would invade Canada for the control of their ressources? Because exept for Russia or USA, nobody can even reach Canada(and we are far from being jealous of the Canadians ressources).

(Edit)Forget. I failed and readed "I think that there is going to be wars about freshwater in the near future. Both you and I UNfortunality lives in countries with an abundance of
that".

Re: Overpopulation

@SgtPeppers

That is true, if you gave every person 1 square meter you could
fit them all on Öland. It isas you say the resources that are lacking.
As for changing their perception I think it is to late for that. I think
that there is going to be wars about freshwater in the near future.
Both you and I fortunality lives in countries with an abundance of
that thanks to the latest iceage, I do not know how maný lakes there are in Canada but I do know that you have it in abundance
as do we here, we have the 4 biggies in the middle of the country.

I am fully aware of the mechanisms at play, I also know that all you need is time to alter the perception of any society on any issue.

Re: Overpopulation

@Fontinelle

Unfortunately, the concern is not the space that the human takes up, but the resources they use, if every person in the world had a western quality of life, we would need 4 or 5 earths to provide the resources.

I am not saying to educate them that population growth is bad, I am saying that universal access to education causes an almost immediate drop in the birth rate.

"Educating" the persons by trying to influence their choice and their perception, I think it's called propaganda...

Re: Overpopulation

Overpopulation is not as huge of a problem as people may think. Our entire world population can own a house and a yard, and fit inside an area around the size of France. Hunger is caused by the climate change and by warfare. With new farming techniques, farmers can produce more food with less land. By the time overpopulation becomes a problem, we will have the technology to confront it.

Re: Overpopulation

@SgtPeppers

Oh yes good luck with that. You do know what mechanisms
that are working against that don´t you? One has a lot of
phedofiles, the other has demands that goes beyond stupidity
not to mention the sheer hatred and contempt that it demonstrates.

Re: Overpopulation

@NikoLStak

It is not something you have to convince people of, you simply need to:

1. educate the average parson so they know they are better off with fewer children

2. empower women in the third world so they can have a say in their own reproductive health, rather than being essentially slave to their husbands family

I wish you good luck to convince the world to forget their liberty of reproduction then... Or to convince the world to spend billions into space colonisation.

Re: Overpopulation

I am personally inclined to think we might be able to curb population growth prior to any Armageddon of overpopulation, though that assumes we get the vatican away from reproductive policy.

Re: Overpopulation

When the population will reach critical mass, it will fall in a big genocide(Comited by humans or/and the nature). Then the cycle will start again but this time, with the knowledge and advancement of the first cycle.

Re: Overpopulation

The good news, Atheism is the only belief (or lack thereof) system still growing, the bad news, the smart highly educated people are usually not having more kids than replacement value, whereas the less able are usual having way more than that.

Re: Overpopulation

@SgtPeppers

I think I have to aquire that book, it sounds interesting. But back to the point I am glad I have reached a certain age because the world
are heading for a disaster, you have the overpopulation and as a direct result of that massive immigration of religious crazies to the west and our own politicians cowtowing to their demands, it looks
bleak and shortly there probably will be a price on Dawkins head
like the Danish cartoonists, one thing that religious crazies have
not is a sense of humour. Basically the prospects are: A devastated
world because of extreme overpopulation, a global caliphate, some
kind of limited nuclear war, world famine. Mind you these are not
mutually exclusive. I suppose I am something of a pessimist.

He opened the second chapter of the god delusion with many of those words, and often quotes the description in debates, there is no better way to irritate christians than big words to describe their god (accurately, as a matter of fact).

Re: Overpopulation

@SgtPeppers

Of course one does not need to curse to insult people
I just like to do for emphasis, in Swedish we have some
really bad ones you know. I suspect that is because we have
3 more letters in the alphabet than you do. Icelandic has 32
letters and there we are talking about curses. there is a clip on
youtube were Dawkins are using just those words to describe
the desertgod, most entertaining.
