  • The Human Race developed nuclear bombs in the 1940's. The world quickly saw the power of these bombs when The United States first used them on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Since then, many nations have developed nuclear weapons. The Chinese, The Russians, The British, The French, India, Pakistan, etcetera . Scientists today know the danger of such weapons. Not only can they destroy cities, but in a third world war, countries may be tempted to use them, and if one nation fires a nuclear missile, all of them will. Such destruction may not only lead to billions of deaths, but the extinction of most land life, even all life on Earth.

    The United States, The People's Republic of China, and The Russian Federation (the world's leading powers) all have imperial ambitions. War could break out between nations at any time, and it is crucial that nuclear war must be avoided. How? Some have suggested World Unification. Uniting every country under one banner. Some have ventured to call this nation "Terra" or "The Terran Empire." At first, if this were to happen, there would be rebellions and constant conflict, but overall, could it work? Could the world unify to form a civilization that could work together to eliminate the evils of the world and venture out into space, colonizing and terraforming planets and meeting and talking to alien civilizations?

@NikoLStak

There is  no such thing like eternal enemies. Just look at France and Germany which used to be "eternal" enemies.

Also there is no such thing as two cultures totally opposed to each other. Regardless of culture people are human and all humans have the same needs, it's in our genes. All cultural expressions are just different solutions to the all the same problems and needs.
That i learned through my intensive studies on the cultures of China and Japan which are often considered as the opposite of western culture (individualism vs. group orientation etc.).

Re: Unification of Planet Earth

I think in a globalized world patriotism and nationalism will become more and more obsolete. Why not following the example of the European Union?
This is a unification which would mean no war, no military and a cultural independence for each member state.

Re: Unification of Planet Earth

Unification? As some of the others had probably said (I didn't bother reading everything, sorry) I don't think it just happens, even if we would have a better society with the whole planet unified. Nationalism, patriotism, most just won't let that go, even though they're being proud of something (I mean, is it because of you that you're American? If no, why're you proud?).

Anyways, I don't see it happening. Even if everyone keeps their cultures and flags, the fact still remains that many people are too proud to just let their nation's history go and merge with the others. People are just too proud and stubborn for that.

I think that this world is keeping itself together because of fear. Fear that it will go to war again or fear of dying. but after a few centuries a man can lead to war and fight against nations. so i personally think that the world cant unite but if does it will be because of the so called "aliens" invading or trying to get near our plant or some other reasons

Re: Unification of Planet Earth

@SgtPeppers

Very sorry I impressed you - I don't have an idea!

It's part of a bigger question - how do we move away from complacent voters and non-voters accepting that an elite can dominate them and preserve all these man-made national divisions that are at the heart of our problems?

If you look at the population of the planet simplistically as those two groups, it seems the one is as irresponsible as the other.  One acts irresponsibly and the other let's them get away with it. The arrogant blind leading the apathetic blind.

I'm a newbie on this forum but here's the cards-on-the-table comment: I don't see any qualitative improvement in our circumstances that doesn't involve a change from within.

A most apt summary and I fully agree. Can I gather that you think this is a good idea for the long term?

Re: Unification of Planet Earth

There are two distinct issues here:
1 Is it good idea?
2 How is it to be done?

No one can FORCE unity on the world... not to mention that world leaders show no interest anyway. So while there is no ready answer to question 2, we shouldn't dismiss the opportunity presented by question 1.
Note the question was posed against a doomsday scenario of 'what if we don't?'  We're actually trying to solve our own collective stupidity here... find a way of not blowing ourselves up.  (Was there something in that video about intelligence maybe not being such a good thing?!?!?)

That there is no obvious road map to achieve such a monstrous change in our world order, does not mean we cannot improve on what we have, and it should not deter us from seeking change for the better.

Withdrawing our personal support from the elitist power-crazed political nutjobs that are currently in charge is at least better than throwing our hands up in the air.  Revolutions start with ideas.

Obviously thats what he meant, my response was pointing out an unintended irony, not creating a substantive argument for or against his point.

They prosperes but none of the cultures in America have merged...
They destroys each others and if it's not because of cultures, it's because of political ideas.

The world merging into one nation, it's impossible.

But, the differents cultures who accepts each other is more realist.

Has it progress, the differences should became less important. It's going that way since a long time ago and a lot of progress has been made. We will not all become fat asses that eat Mcdo eveydays if it keep that way but all the planet's cultures working togheter to invade Mars. Of course, it's not for tomorrow.

I think it might be optimistic to say that the current world could unify, I think a more accurate concept would have a gradual merger in the future, probably at least century.

Re: Unification of Planet Earth

Unification is not the same thing as Anarchy. Anarchy is a wild idea, unification is not. In fact it is the best way to avoid catastrophe that could lead to the death of our species. What I think is impossible, is that we would all merge into one culture. One nation, yes, but even your United States does not have one culture. Similar cultures, yes, but each region of your country has different views on how things should be done, and yet you prosper.

We do not postulate immediate reunification, I personally believe it will be a gradual process as a more global perspective is taken as a result of globalization.

For the same reasons that an anarchist society would never possible, equally a "unification" would never be possible.

Re: Unification of Planet Earth

@Fontinelle

I think that an eventual global society is a crucial and inevitable step, unless we are overwhelmed by our primitive urges and bronze age superstitions and destroy what we have worked to build. If you look at the world today, you see a relatively small number of power bases, each holding similar hopes, issues and agendas, you have:

1.The North Americans: the US and Canada

2. The Eurozone (I include England with the rest of Europe)

3. The Asian Giants (India, China, Russia)

4. Africa (Most power concentrated in the middle east)

And, it can be narrowed down further, with 1 and 2 being similar enough to be counted as 1 group.

The idea of nation states is becoming less and less relevant, a country is viewed much more like a province, the place you reside, but not a separate entity from the rest of humanity.

We humans share so much genetically and culturally, I think it is being squandered by our continued separation from this fact. We must either grow or decay. Which do you choose?

Re: Unification of Planet Earth

Forcing eternals ennemies to unite together... It would be a cultural apocalypse. The cultures are differents, many are totally opposed to others.

The only way to unite the planet is by destroying all the cultures opposed to the strongest one(A terrible thing). Learn to live togheter is very hard, many thing that are common and polite in France are unacceptable somewhere else by exemple.
