  •    Debate about the most tolerant religions.

    I think near the top would be Islam,  the main reason is because of the Ottoman's kindness to the Spanish Jews, and giving them homage in the city of Salonika, which became the only major city with a majority Jewish, rich , population.

Misinterpreted.Thats all I have to say.Read the Qur'an.It says you can defend yourself if your attacked.This is called Lesser Jihad.This has been misinterpreted By a Radical,minority of Muslim young men as American troops in Afghanistan and Iraq means that they need to "defend" Islam by attacking Americans or their allies.

@chankya

You could interpret killing idol worshippers as converting them, as do people who read the bible interpret from the Bible.

m agree except on islam, many verses in quran openly says to slaughter infidels and non muslims.

this is a fact.

but no any verses in holy book of oriental religions calls violence or killing of humans even thry dont advocate killing of animals.
more than 90 percent of terrorism has been done on the name of islam and quran openly tells to kill idol worshiper.:):

It's more the followers rather than the Religion that are violent.Lets take Hinduism.

                           I don't think that any of the gods or the Brahma ask people to kill people who are different religion,and yet people continue to kill one another because of it.

                            These people do not represent the religion itself,but the violent part of it hand

If you see closely, hinduism is confined to the bounds of india.  The weird thing is that their are more muslims in india then in pakistan.  Also the countries that captured india did not ferociously convert them (with some exceptions).

Re: Most Tolerant Religions

@maps12

How in the world did Hinduism survive 800 yrs of Muslim rule, then 250 yrs of Christian rule?

Why did all religions died and Hinduism survived?

Why did Hinduism survive while the other IE pagan religions died out?

within a few hundred years after Christ, the Roman world was largely Christian, having abandoned the old paganism. (As Cecil says here (http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a5_248.html), " the old Greek and Roman pagan religions were [...] completely out of gas."). Why the old paganism ceased to be compelling for a large part of the population I don't know, but the fact remains that a great many people found no problem abandoning their indigenous beliefs for an imported religion (unless you believe that Christianity was just paganism under a different name, which I don't).

The rest of the first millenium saw most of the northern European pagan cultures becoming Christianized -- the Celts, Slavs, and Germanic peoples. Christianity never took firm hold in Persia, but Islam did, and today Zoroastrianism is hanging on by a fibre of a thread.

So that leaves India. Despite an early Christian presence in the south, continuous trading contacts with the Islamic and Graeco-Roman worlds, and several centuries of Muslim rule, today only around one-eighth of the population is Muslim, and Hindus are by far the majority. The Graeco-Roman religion is long defunct, and the living transmission of Hellenic philosophy ceased. The Druids are gone, and we scarcely know the first thing about their religion. The best information we have on Balto-Slavic paganism is a set of 20th-century copies of a now-lost set of inscriptions that stand a good chance of having been forgeries. But Hindu philosophy is still being transmitted from teacher to student, and the old gods and old rituals are still going strong. So what is it about India that allowed Hinduism to survive and thrive, while everywhere else it was replaced almost completely by Christianity or Islam?
