Though it is irrelevant to the topic at hand, US democracy has more to do with the Iroquis Confederation than Athens. Lies your teacher told you lmao

@KGB

Stalingrad and Kursk were the 2 battles that caused the collapse of the Wehrmacht, and achieved the defeat of Nazi Germany.

The world should be for ever grateful to Russia for the sacrifice it made.

I think the greatest battle of all time is the battle of Lexington. To think that rag-tag rebels would go up against the greatest empire on Earth for their freedom:champ:

Re: Greatest battle in history?

The Thermopylae death ratio was nearly 1 Spartan to 100 Persians. In this sense, Thermopylae is THE greatest battle, before gunpowder was used anyway.

Re: Greatest battle in history?

two battles in my opinion. Ia Drang valley and Thermopylae Ia drang valley was the most epic. Because the US Air Cavalry went in to ambush the NVA. it got messed up but Colonel Howe Moore pulled it together and charged right up that god damn hill. that battle showed the most bravery showing that no matter who you are or where you are you can do it no matter the cost. then Thermopylae. sparta went to thermopylae to help kill persians because if they weren't there Greece would've fell everyone slaves for the Persian empire. but they and 1,000 thurman's stayed to cover the retreat knowing they had no chance. the remaining forces retreated to the Athens to warn the navy. Athens got the message and was prepared. the spartans help keep Athenian democracy so without the battle of Thermopylae the UN and the US wouldn't be here.

The history of the three kingdoms, while probably more story than fact now, is one of the most amazing and provocative periods in Chinese history. This video is an adaptation of a Chinese classic, "The history of the three Kingdoms", a romanticized version of the war.

Re: Greatest battle in history?

I believe that the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War was the most influential battle. This is because of a few factors. This was the first (and only) invasion of the Union North by the Confederate South, led by General Robert E. Lee. The Battle was accidental, which started when a small Southern regiment wanted to get some shoes from a nearby factory in the small town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The regiment ran into a Northern patrol and all hell broke loose. Both sides fought along a road, both also calling for reinforcements. The reinforcements would end up being the bulk of both armies in the bloodiest battle of the Western Hemisphere. If the South managed to win, they would have full access to the North, Washington, D.C., and could have quite possible won the war. But in the end, military blunders like "Pickett's Charge" and the Battle of Little-Round Top led to the ultimate defeat of the Confederacy, leaving around 51,000 Americans dead. If the Confederacy had won, America would be very different, and although some would like to dispute it, the U.S. had an immense impact on the modern world. What the modern world would look like is completely up for you to decide, but this is where I stand.

Re: Greatest battle in history?

@RivalSandy1

It was a battle won by mistakes of the french, as already was refered in a post not to far below mine.

The Aljubarrota battle, had about the same numbers, with the handicap for the portuguese side, that the castillians had 15 mortars, and the portuguese had none.

Portugal only had the help of 100 english crossbowmen, due to the marriage of the King John I of Portugal with Philippa Lancaster, whereas the Spanish had the support of 2000 french heavy knights (aka one the best cavalry at the time). The total castillian army was composed by castillian, aragonese, french and italian allies.

Portugal ended with less than 1000 casualties, whereas the other side had 4 to 5 thousand casualties in battle and more 5000 in the aftermath.

If Agincourt battle is elected the greatest battle in history, then Aljubarrota battle shouldn't be far behind.

Keep in mind, that if Castille had own that battle, it would have own the war and there would be no Portugal in the 1400's and 1500's, meaning, the spanish probably could be the first to discover the sea route to india, and to discover the world after that.
Not to mention that, an anexation of Aragon wouldn't be that dificcult if Portugal lost that war.

Basically Spain would be formed a lot sooner, and that could mean a very different Europe today.

Re: Greatest battle in history?

The battle of stalingrad, though wasn't thought through by both sides had epic, war deterimining consequences which if resulted differently would cause an occupation of Russia During WW2 and perhaps an advantage for The Wehrmacht and the most horrible war ever was to become even more disastrous battles to follow and many more casualties. In modern warfare I must point out the six day war, which was an astonishing victory by the State of Israel upon three, with a clearly bigger army Arab countries. tripling The size of the country and gaining valuable and stratigically important sites in a matter of less then a week still remains quite extraordinary till this day.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six-Day_War
